Name: Puppy Primer Authors: Brenda Scidmore & Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. Deposit: $8 (refunded when the book is returned) Description: This
book is intended to be a guide for raising and training puppies.
The authors' state that the "days of letting your pup grow up under the
front porch chasing the mailman and roaming the neighborhood are
over. " Owners need to have control of their dogs and raise them
to be well-mannered citizens who have been integrated into our lives.
This book is designed to be read one chapter a week for six weeks while
implementing the training suggestions each week. Chapter one
includes socialization, teaching come, teaching sit, teaching
down. With regards to socialization, the authors' state "if a pup
grows up in an empty room or on a chain in a yard, without any
environmental input, that's about all he/she will be equipped to deal
with as an adult. A dog like this would not know how to interact with
unfamiliar adults, children, other dogs, cats, cars, vacuums or many of
the other common occurrences of life." When and how to socialize
puppies is discussed with several suggestions about how and where to
socialize for the best possible outcomes. Luring and positive
reinforcement methods are described along with training techniques and
when to practice. Chapter two includes puppy biting, housetraining, sit
and down revisited, come, teaching stand, and socialization.
Chapter three includes verbal praise, corrections,
sit-down-stand, come walking by your side, belly up or play dead.
This chapter discusses conditioning your puppy to enjoy praise
and remote corrections. Setting rules and consistency, prevention
and supervision, remote corrections and set-ups are described with
methods to teach puppies responsible behavior in the household setting.
Chapter four includes play while training, when play backfires,
stealing. This book is a wonderful tool for training puppies and
can be read out loud to children so that everyone in the family can
participate in puppy training.
